Mr. Tha joined Spark IP Law in September of 2014. He focuses his services in the areas of patents, trademarks, and copyrights among other areas. He is currently a Juris Doctor Candidate 2016 at The John Marshall Law School. While in law school, he served as the Student Bar Association Representative for the Intellectual Property Law Society of The John Marshall Law School. He is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, American Bar Association, and American Chemical Society. Before attending law school, he received his B.S. in Molecular & Cellular Biology in 2009 from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After which, he went on to receive his M.S. in Chemistry in 2011 from Western Illinois University.

During Mr. Tha’s graduate years, he served as a research assistant to Dr. Lisa Wen, focusing on pharmacological and enzymatic studies of protease enzymes that promote metastases in tumors, funded by the National Institute of Health. He has presented his research at the national meeting for the American Chemical Society. Furthermore, he was awarded the Dr. Norbert Goeckner Scholarship in recognition of superior achievement in chemistry in 2010 and awarded Outstanding Research as part of the Research Experiences for Studies and Science Educators in 2011, funded by the National Cancer Institute. In October of 2011, Mr. Tha was a co-author of Subcloning and Expression of Functional Human Cathepsin B and K in E. coli: Characterization and Inhibition by Flavonoids, published in Molecular Cloning: Selected Applications in Medicine and Biology. During his undergraduate years, he was selected by Deputy Director, Dr. Isaac Cann, of the Energy Biosciences Institute to perform undergraduate research focusing on biocatalysis and conversion of plant cell wall polysaccharides to biofuels as part of BP®’s alternative-fuel research program. Prior to law school, he worked in quality control at Procter & Gamble. He now hopes to use his knowledge and experience to help clients attain ownership over their intellectual properties and assist in their business endeavors.
